On our way home from kerala, we use to shop fresh vegetables that are available only in kerala. There are some picky shops on highway which has farm fresh produce. We never miss to stop there everytime. ☺ Idi chakka, Pacha payaru (dark green variety special in kerala), Nadan Nendran, Koorka, tender kumblainga/tender white pumpkin (smaller pumpkins) which are so tasty when dropped in sambar.

Idi chakka podimas pictorial description:

  1. Peel skin, cut cubes out of it. Wash n clean and pressure cook with salt and turmeric powder to 3-4 whistles until tender.
  2. Cool it and Mash them with hands or fork to shred them.
  3. Grind coconut, green chilli, cumin and curry leaves to a paste.
  4. Heat oil, crackle mustard seeds followed by urad dal and chana dal.
  5. Fry shallots till pink and add shredded jackfruit and ground masala. Adding shallots are optional.
  6. Mix well and add salt. Let it cook for 5-10 min in simmer until raw taste of green chilly is gone.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Tender jackfruit Cubes
  • 1/2 Cup Coconut
  • 1 Tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 Long Green chilly
  • 1 Spring Curry leaves
  • 1/4 Tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 Tsp Urad dal
  • 1/4 Tsp Chana dal
  • 2 Tbsp Shallots chopped
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Grind coconut, green chilli, cumin and curry leaves to a paste. 
  • Heat oil, crackle mustard seeds followed by urad dal and chana dal.
  • Fry shallots till pink and add shredded jackfruit and ground masala. Mix well and add salt. Let it cook for 5-10 min in simmer.
