Cook tur dal with enough water until it gets mashed. If in cooker, use 1 cup dal and 3 cups water and cook to 4 whistles.
Heat 1/2 tbsp oil and roast the coconut pieces/grated coconut in simmer until reddish brown.
Switch off and and sambar powder to it and mix well.
Grind it to a smooth paste and keep it ready.
Splutter mustard seeds, Green chilly and asafoetida. Fry for a minute
add chopped onions, curry leaves and fry until brown
once its brown, add the tomatoes and fry for a minute.
Add the chopped vegetable(white pumpkin) , salt and turmeric powder. Mix well Pour little water and close and cook until vegetables are almost done.
Now add the cooked dal and tamarind extract. boil for 5 more minutes in medium flame.
Add the ground masala.Close and cook until it boils
