Chow Chow kootu

  • 1/2 cup bengal gram
  • 1 cup chow chow - chopped
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 dry red chilly
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 6-7 nos small onions - finely chopped
  • 3-4 nos garlic cloves - finely chopped
  • 1 medium sized tomato - finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 - 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp sambar powder - optional


  • Cook Kadala paruppu(Bengal gram) until mushy and keep it aside. Cut chow chow into cubes and keep it aside
  • Heat Oil in Cooker, add mustard seeds and let it splutter.
  • Add cumin seeds, Red chilli, curry leaves, Chopped small onions, and Chopped garlic. Saute well and once onions turn pink, add tomatoes and saute well.
  • Add chow chow & cooked dal. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, salt and sambar powder
  • Add Little water and cook it to 3-4 whistles
  • Open it and smash well. Seasoning (Optional) : Heat coconut oil and add red chilli and curry leaves. fry a little and add the seasoning to the curry
