Oats kozhukattai

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup oats
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp chana dal - split chickpeas
  • 1 tsp split urad dal - split black gram lentils
  • 3 dried red chillies - broken
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 1 onion - finely chopped
  • 1 grated carrot
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp coconut pieces

Instructions

  • In a pan, roast the oats over medium heat until they turn slightly brown and smell nutty. Remove from heat and keep aside.
  • In another pan, heat 2 tsp oil over medium heat. Add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp chana dal, 1 tsp split urad dal, 3 dried red chillies (broken), and a sprig of curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds.
  • Add the chopped onions and fry until they turn soft and translucent.
  • Add the grated carrots and saute for 30 seconds.
  • Add 1 cup water and 1/2 tsp salt. Bring it to a boil.
  • Once the water starts boiling, add the roasted oats to the pan. Cook on high heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the coconut pieces in between and continue cooking until the mixture is dry.
  • Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  • Grease your hands with oil and make small ball-shaped dumplings (kozhukattai) from the mixture.
  • Place the kozhukattais in a steamer and steam for 5-8 minutes.
  • Serve hot with chutney.
