  • 2 cups cauliflower florets

to grind coarsely

  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp peppercorns
  • 4-5 no garlic cloves
  • 1/2 inch ginger
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds

to make the stir fry

  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1/2 cup onion - chopped
  • 1 large tomato - chopped
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves


  • grind everything given under "to grind coarsely" to a coarse powder. 
  • clean the cauliflower florets and put them in a bowl of hot water with turmeric powder for 15 minutes.
  • strain it and add the coarse pepper spice mix to it and mix well. set it aside
  • heat oil in a pan and crackle mustard seeds and cumin seeds. 
  • further add chopped onions and fry till slightly brown. 
  • chop the tomatoes and add it to the pan. fry for a minute. 
  • to this onion tomato mixture, add the marinated cauliflower pieces, salt and 1/2 a cup of water. 
  • close and cook until the cauliflower is soft. may take 10-15 minutes. 
  • open and let it dry on high flame until slightly roasted and colour changes from brown to black. 
  • lastly add chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice and curry.
