Kollu thuvaiyal

There are many interesting tales running around this horsegram. One interesting thing i got to know from my friend is that we should never cook horsegram for our guests. I asked her, why? ?She explained that the relationship with them would end up in a fight if we serve horsegram to them. ? Interesting?? Am thinking now, to which of my guests il try this on. ?

Kollu thuvaiyal recipe:

Soak the horsegram for an hour minimum before cooking. I use to soak them overnight as it is said to be hard for digestion and need to be cooked for long to get it mushy. So, soak them atleast an hour before you cook. But that also depends on quality of horsegram used.

Pressure cook horsegram, garlic, cumin seeds, peppercorns, red chilli, curry leaves, tomatoes and turmeric powder to 5-6 with enough water until horsegram is cooked.

Mash and strain the excess water. You can use this stock for making rasam.

Grind this along with shallots, salt and  grated coconut coarsely. Do not grind them to a paste. All thuvaiyal/ chammandhis are supposed be little coarse so that the raw taste of those ingredients gets along when mixed with rice.
