Cabbage Usili – Usili Thoran ? Parupu Usili is crumbled lentils and Thoran is simple coconut based keralite dish. How about mixing up a usili and thoran with cabbage? cabbage for its bland taste when mixed up with paruppu usili is one step up with its spiciness, when cooked with coconut is a perfect combination. Try these at your home with any vegetable of your choice (Cabbage, beans varieties, capsicum or any bland vegetable)

Cabbage Usili recipe

Cabbage Usili Thoran

Servings: 4 People


  • 1/2 cup Chana dal Soaked for an hour
  • 1 cup Cabbage Finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup Coconut grated
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 3 nos Red chillies
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp broken urad dal
  • Salt To taste


  • Drain water completely from the soaked dal, grind it along curry leaves, 2 red chillies, turmeric powder, salt and asafoetida
  • Apply oil in idli pan and place the ground paste in idli pan
  • Steam cook for 5 to 10 min until dal is cooked and comes out like idli
  • Crumble those and keep it ready
  • Meanwhile, heat oil, splutter mustard seeds, urad dal, red chilly. Add cabbage, turmeric powder, salt and sprinkle water. Close and cook for 10 min until cabbage is almost cooked.
  • Now add the crumbled dal and grated coconut and mix well. Serve hot with rice and curry
